According to Dennis, his life has always included dogs. Growing up in Portsmouth, Virginia, he often watched his mother pick up pitiful stray dogs and nurse them to a healthy and happy life.
When he was 8 years old, he won his very own first dog (a black-and-white Boston Bull Terrier) by guessing the number of jelly beans in a jar. A picture etched in his memory is of Mickey (the Boston terrier) and Dennis sitting on the steps that led from the kitchen to the furnace room of their modest home. “I would talk to Mickey and tell him about my bigger-than-life problems. I don’t remember anything he said back to me, but I felt comforted by that little dog.”
Jean grew up in Cumberland County, Virginia. Her dad was the Baptist pastor of five country churches. Jean had outdoor dogs that she babied and spoiled, carrying them about in a basket on her bicycle. She sneaked milk to the feral cats that for some reason were always around her house.
After high school, Jean went 60 miles east, and Dennis went 90 miles west. They met at the University of Richmond and, from there, their lives were forged together in an adventure that took them to Paraguay, South America.
Although their focus in South America was assisting in the formation and growth of Christian lives, they managed to enjoy the company of many dogs. Over a period of 20 years, they raised six litters of toy poodles, 5 litters of majestic German shepherds, and one litter of boxers.
The health of their pets was always a major concern for them. To avoid issues with in-breeding, Jean twice took a 10-hour wild bus ride to Curitiba, Brazil, with puppies in hand, to trade them for special bloodline poodles from Brazil.
Since their return to the U.S.A., their family has continued to include toy poodles, enriched by the Brazilian bloodline. Recently, they welcomed into their home a Morkie (Zoe) that was a gift to them. Puzzle toys are a favorite of Zoe. With her inquisitive nature, she loves to solve all the puzzles. She’s not satisfied until every piece of treat is found.
